The Manor Park Golf Club has a history tracing back to 1913. There is a brilliant picture on the website with the original members, all in hats of the era. The club prides itself on being an equal opportunity club, as one of the first golf clubs in NZ to go gender-free tees. Not men’s and ladies, but short and long with unique colour choices including terracotta (our white) tees.
They're a club where they strive to create wildlife happy, environment friendly golf club, becoming an afiliated sanctuary. The programme they run is an on-going and continuous process involving management and enhancement of wildlife habitat, water resource management, reduction in water and cheical use, a commitment to recycling of waste and a plan to involve the community and the club’s membership in these activities and initiatives.
The history of the club shows they have an eco and social conscious.
They, unfortunately, don’t show the same compassion for the golfers, as they present a course that has many difficulties. A skinny course that is easy flat walking, but never gives an inch, as one of the Wellington's finest Championship courses.
A par 71 at just over 6,000 metres off the back tees, be patient and enjoy the golfing sanctuary.
Home of Michael Campbell, home of many great names of our professionals, including Steven Scahill, Bradley Iles and Mal Tongue.
They were also home of New Zealand Golf and New Zealand Golf Elite Titleist Academy in the early 2000s, to create the finest players like, Danny Lee, Craig Perks, Mahal Pearce and Brad Shilton. Also, I was lucky to dabble in few of the coaching schools that were hosted by NZ Golf, so I also have fond memories of the place - held the course record for 1 day before Bradley Iles came home with -7 the next day.
